Editorial policy
Our goal is to help readers compare credit cards on the factors that affect what a card costs and what it gives back. This page explains how we research, present and maintain our content.
Where our information comes from
Card summaries start from the issuer’s published terms and product materials as captured on the original card pages: annual fees, APRs, transaction and penalty fees, introductory offers, rewards and benefits. We organize cards into categories so that cards are compared with similar cards — a secured card next to other secured cards, a travel card next to other travel cards.
What we evaluate
- Rewards: earn rates, categories and redemption options.
- Fees: annual, foreign transaction, balance transfer, cash advance and penalty fees.
- APRs: purchase and balance transfer rates and any introductory period.
- Benefits: protections, insurance and cardholder perks.
- Who the card suits: the credit profile the issuer recommends and the spending habits that get the most from the card.
No star scores
We do not assign star ratings or numeric scores. The right card depends on how you will use it, so we describe strengths and trade-offs instead.
Dates and accuracy
Card terms can change at any time, so every card page reminds readers to confirm current terms on the issuer’s site and links to the issuer’s terms where available.
Independence from advertisers
Advertising and any affiliate compensation, described in our advertiser disclosure, do not determine what we write about a card. Advertisers do not review or approve our content.
