Balance Transfer Credit Cards

Balance transfer cards let you move existing card debt to a new account, often with a reduced or 0% introductory APR for a set number of months. Used well, they let more of each payment go toward the principal. The transfer fee and the APR that applies after the intro period are just as important as the length of the offer.

What to look for

  • Transfer fee: most cards charge a percentage of each transferred amount, which is added to the balance.
  • Intro period length and deadline: offers usually apply only to transfers made within a set window after opening.
  • Regular APR afterwards: any balance left when the intro period ends accrues interest at the standard rate.
