Store Credit Cards

Store cards are offered by retailers, usually through a partner bank. Some only work at that retailer; others run on a payment network and work anywhere. Their main draws are discounts, rewards on store purchases and special financing offers, but regular APRs on store cards are often high.

What to look for

  • Closed-loop or network card: decide whether you need a card that works outside the store.
  • Deferred-interest financing: if the balance is not paid in full by the end of the promo, interest may be charged back to the purchase date.
  • Regular APR: store card rates are often higher than general-purpose cards.
